Originally developed over seas in
These dogs have the brains, bird desire and beauty that set this breed apart
from others. They are excellent hunting dogs, companions, and calm family pets.
Generally, they are aloof towards strangers and loyal almost to a fault to the
person they pick, a one-person dog. They do not do well locked in a kennel all
day and night, Gordon’s need contact with their owners, to lay at your feet (or
on the couch) play with your family and always waiting to go on the next
adventure. They are a working breed and live to hunt. I have never seen my dogs
happier than when they are in the field doing what they’ve been bred to do.
We are a small breeder striving to produce “Classy” Gordon Setters you would be proud to own. At this time we produce about one litter of puppies a year. Our objective is to produce good looking, biddable, intense and companion / gundogs. These dogs will work out to 75 yards in thick cover and out to approx 350 yards in thin cover. These are working lines of setters that are being hunted on Sharp-tail’s, Woodland Grouse, Chukar, Huns, Valley Quail and Woodcock when I travel back east. Puppies from previous litters have also performed well on pheasants. We test our dogs in AKC Hunt Tests. We also ensure we are breeding healthy and happy dogs by having our dogs tested for genetic problems. Bettering the breed is ultimately our goal.
Kelly and I have completed our move to Boise Idaho. We have a nice home with an acre of land in a great location. This is enough land to build some kennels and for the dogs to run and yet small enough to not overwhelm me with chores. Kelly is a Chaplin at St Luke’s hospital. This is something that she’s always wanted to do. I’m retired Air Force and currently working for the Veterans Hospital in Boise. We both love the outdoors - hiking, biking, camping, and canoeing are some of our favorite past-times. Most of all I love to bird hunt with my dogs. Watching them run and do what they’ve been bred to do is poetry in motion. I'm an active member in the local pointing dog club and participate in AKC hunt tests.
Our dogs:
Taran’s TallGrass Samie, NAVHDA NA III (Samie)
Samie is a
natural. She’ll hold her head high to catch that body scent and if
necessary will put her head down to trail. Her mother “Bela” is used
as a guide dog on a game preserve and as a wild bird dog. Bela has had
literally thousands of pheasants shot over her. Samie is currently 4
yrs old and has been hunting really well. She Points staunchly and is
steady to flush, and retrieves with the enthusiasm of a lab. Her pups
have a natural desire to back or honor and retrieve. Out on the
prairies of
Samie is calm,
affectionate and a pleasure to have around. She loves kids and other
animals. Her favorite play toy is the cat, who is a willing playmate.
She’s not stubborn or hardheaded; all she needs as a reminder is a verbal
reprimand. Samie weighs about 43 lbs and is about 23" at the shoulder
and all muscle.
Samie has her NAVHDA Natural Ability (NA) Price III and her AKC Junior Hunter (JH) title and OFA rating of “Good”. She has no health problems at all.

Kelly and I recently became
care takers of a new puppy, her name is Maggie. She was born 14 Sept 2007
and comes from Whiskey River Kennels in southern
Maggie has taken to her new environment quite quickly, carrying herself with confidence; she pretty much has taken over the house from the two other dogs and two cats. She has plenty of style when pointing a wing on a string, but at 13 weeks old there’s lots of growing and maturing to do. She enjoys chasing our cats and is doing well with house breaking and learning proper manners. I’m excited to have a new puppy around; it certainly does stir the pot. Please keep tabs on her as she matures.
Maggie made her first point the
other day, at 5 ½ months old. Kelly and I have taken her and the other dogs out
at least weekly and allowed them to run to their hearts content in the foot
hills above
